This has been one of the hottest summers on record as new temperature highs were set all across the northern hemisphere this year. If you’re like us at Crucial, you’ve been planning to celebrate November 26th with a huge party. (That’s the birthday of William Carrier, father of modern air conditioning.) While you might not be as enthusiastic as we are, you’ve probably been running your air conditioning a lot. And that means your cooling bill has seen some pretty high numbers too. 4 Tips on Walking to Beat the Summer Heat!

Now that we’re officially in the dog days of summer (so named because Sirius, the dog star, now rises when the sun does), it’s tempting to just sit inside with the air conditioning blasting. However, just because it’s hot outside doesn’t mean that you should stop keeping up with your healthy habits. While exercising in the summer heat can be more strenuous, you don’t have to run fifteen miles per day to stay healthy.

We at Crucial like to get our exercise in by walking. Experts recommend that you get a half hour of exercise at least three times per week. You don’t even have to do it all at one time. Three sessions that are ten minutes long or two fifteen minute bursts are just as effective. So, take your dog for two walks around the block, or spend ten minutes on a treadmill at various times through the day. Continue reading »

Spring Cleaning pt 2: The Essential Decluttering Tips

Spring Cleaning Decluttering tipsLast week in our Spring Cleaning series, we at Crucial discussed a great starting point for your annual cleaning spree: checking your roof and crawl spaces. This week we’re going to get you started on that spring decluttering. You know, the annual, “Do I really need to keep this Summer ’12 Pottery Barn catalog?” (Hint: unless you participated in making the catalog, probably not). We’re going to cover some great decluttering tips to get you started and touch on some things you definitely shouldn’t do. After all, whether you live in a one-bedroom apartment or a 16-room mansion, decluttering is a big job and intensely personal. Also, keep in mind that spring cleaning isn’t usually a one weekend job unless you live in a studio apartment. A proper spring clean can take twenty hours of work to do. Spacing that out over a few weekends can really help keep the job from stressing you out.
